Frequently asked questions, answered
What design options are available to me?
All our mouthguards are totally bespoke, so you can make your mouthguard unique to you.
- One colour - choose one colour for your mouthguard from our options
- Two colour - choose two colours. The mouthguard will be half and half.
- Rugby designs - we have the exclusive rights to produce the official Edinburgh Rugby and Scotland Rugby designs using their latest logos. These are both produced on a classic white background.
- You can select to have the GRIT logo on the front or side of your mouthguard. All Edinburgh Rugby and Scotland Rugby mouthguards will have GRIT on the side.
Hard insert/extra thickness
- Please select a hard insert if you intend to wear the mouthguard playing hockey or ice hockey
- We would also advise a hard insert for anyone with a dental implant in their front teeth. Extra thickness is required for boxing and MMA.
- All our mouthguards are named, so please ensure you let us know what name you want on the name tag which is on the back inside of the mouthguard.
How long will it take for my order to be processed?
We estimate you should receive your mouthguard within three weeks from purchasing it from the GRIT website. We recommend that you check availability with your prefered dentist prior to making a purchase. Assuming you can get an appointment within a week, as soon as your impression has been taken, your dentist will send it to us and it takes us around 14 days at busy times to make up your mouthguard and then we send it out by First Class post. Times may be shorter in quieter periods or if your dentist has an immediate appointment.
Can I cancel or change an order once it is placed?
If you wish to cancel or amend an order then please contact us as quickly as possible, and we will do our best to comply with your request. Please note however that once we have received your impression it is not possible for it to be amended or cancelled.
Getting Your Impression
How do I make my appointment?
Phone or email your chosen dentist from our list of GRIT preferred dentists. Let them know you are coming for a mouthguard impression for a GRIT mouthguard.
What do I need to take to my dentist appointment?
You need to print off the voucher we emailed you. If you don’t have a printer, your dentist may be able to print it off for you if you email it to them on the day of your appointment.
How long will the impression take?
It only takes a few minutes to take a dental impression so you’ll be in and out in no time.
What does taking an impression involve?
Your dentist will fill a dental tray with a liquid which has a putty consistency. You then bite into it and it will set in a couple of minutes. They then send us this impression and we create your custom-fitted mouthguard from that.
What if I can’t get an appointment at my chosen dentist?
We recommend that you check availability for a mouthguard fitting with your preferred GRIT dentist before purchasing a mouthguard voucher. If you can’t get an appointment at the dentist you chose at check out, you can change to another dentist, as long as they are on the approved list on our website. Just email email@example.com to confirm you plan to change dentist.
How are GRIT mouthguards made?
Once we receive your impression, we will make a model of your teeth in stone then create your mouthguard using layers of ‘blanks’ in our pressure laminating machine . All our mouthguards are finished by hand in our lab, by our highly skilled, GDC registered technicians. The technicians create 2-3 layers incorporating the designs and name.
Watch this video to see all the stages of production. You will quickly see just how much goes into producing a custom-fitted mouthguard which is the only way to give your teeth the highest level of protection.
What is the Bite Mark?
The British Bite Mark represents the dental laboratory industry in the UK. Wherever you see the British Bite Mark logo, you can be confident that custom made dental appliances have been manufactured on site in a British dental laboratory to your specific dental requirements. The British Bite Mark also provides patients with confidence that their dentists are using dental laboratories that have registered with all the appropriate regulators and have confirmed that they manufacture your custom made dental appliance in accordance with all legislative requirements.
If you see the British Bite Mark in the dental practice or on literature included with your custom made dental appliance, you can be confident of the following:
- Your custom made dental appliance is manufactured in accordance with the Medical Devices Directive, this means it is made with ‘CE’ marked materials by a qualified dental technician and that the manufacturing dental laboratory is available for an ‘on-the-spot’ inspections from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.
- Your custom made dental appliance has been signed as ‘fit for purpose’ by a General Dental Council registered dental technician. In Great Britain you are unable to call yourself a dental technician unless you hold a recognised qualification in dental technology and have registered with the General Dental Council.

Your New Mouthguard
How do I know that my mouthguard fits?
You should be able to open and close your mouth without it falling out and it should be worn without it affecting your breathing. You should also be able to speak freely when wearing your mouthguard, and most importantly, it should feel comfortable to wear. If you think your mouthguard doesn’t fit properly, please email us and we’ll get in touch firstname.lastname@example.org.
Can I do anything if my mouthguard doesn’t feel comfortable?
Try running it under warm (not hot) water as it may have been cooled in transport. If it still doesn’t feel right, call the dentist where you had the impression taken and they will be able to see how it is fitting and arrange for a new impression to be taken if required.
How should I clean my mouthguard?
Rinse with tepid water. You can use denture/retainer cleaning tablets which are available in most supermarkets and will provide a deeper clean.
How should I store my GRIT mouthguard?
Your mouthguard will arrive in a protective case. When not in use, please ensure it is stored in this case. Don’t let it get hot, so keep it away from heat sources such as radiators or direct sunlight.
We hope you will be happy with your purchase. We will only exchange a mouthguard if it doesn’t fit or is defective. Please inform us of any issues within seven days of receipt of your new mouthguard.
What if my mouthguard doesn’t fit?
If your mouthguard doesn’t fit, please get in touch with us email@example.com to let us know. We will then arrange for another impression to be taken at the dentist where you had your original impression taken. We will then make you a new one. We will provide a freepost envelope so you can send your old mouthguard back to us. Do not use your mouthguard if you feel it does not fit properly.
My mouthguard isn’t in the design I ordered.
If your mouthguard arrives and it was not the design you had ordered, please contact us by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org and if we are at fault, we will arrange a new mouthguard to be delivered as soon as possible.
What if I think my mouthguard is faulty?
All our mouthguards are handmade, finished and quality controlled by GDC registered dental technicians so it is very unlikely that your mouthguard is faulty. That said, if you think your mouthguard is faulty, do not use it. Contact us by emailing email@example.com within seven days of receipt. We may ask you to send us a photo of the mouthguard or send it back to us in its original packaging. If your product is found to be faulty, we will offer a full refund or exchange.
How often should my child have a new mouthguard fitted?
Children’s teeth change regularly with baby teeth falling out and adult teeth coming through, in particular children under 14 years old. The good news is that even if a tooth falls out, the mouthguard should still fit fine, until their new adult tooth has grown in fully, at which stage, a new impression will need to be taken. This may mean your child needs a new mouthguard once or twice a year.
Please don’t opt for an ineffective (and often dangerous) boil and bite mouthguard just because your children’s teeth are still changing. Give their lovely new adult teeth the highest level of protection.
My child wears an orthodontic brace, can they still wear a mouthguard?
Absolutely. They will get an impression taken in the same way and their mouthguard will be made to fit over their brace. As their teeth will be changing, they will need a new impression taken at least every six months.
What if I lose my mouthguard?
We offer replacements for all mouthguards within three months of purchase. We only keep moulds for three months so can’t offer replacements after that period. If you require a replacement, you can email firstname.lastname@example.org. Replacements cost 75% of the cost of the original mouthguard. So if your mouthguard was £65, a replacement would cost £48.75. After three months, you would be required to start a new order and have a new impression taken.
